My Journey: My Skin Story
"I HAVE LEARNED TO REALIZE THAT ACNE DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE AGAINST AGE"

I have always been somebody who had odd, hormonal spots as a teenager. However, I remember at the end of 2015 I returned home from a girls’ trip and to realize I had cystic acne. I was a 21 year old makeup artist- I didn’t fit the bill to have acne. I couldn’t have acne!? How could this have happened to me? As a teenager, I didn’t fit the teenage stereotype. I had breakouts, but nothing like this. But, as time has passed, I have learned to realize that acne does not discriminate against age. I have seen first hand that the age range people relate to acne doesn’t actually exist.
"I FELT INSECURE, UNCONFIDENT, UGLY AND WORTHLESS.
Even during this time, I was still in denial I had acne and was convinced that it was just a flare up and would go away. Finally, my mum persuaded me to see a doctor and he confirmed that I had grade 3 out of 5 acne. I remember I was offered Roaccutane straight away, but (for those who don’t know) there is a lot of controversy around this drug. I was not willing to take the risk without exhausting all other avenues beforehand.
I tried everything, including antibiotic and topical creams that used to irritate my face so much I would wake up in the night and feel like it my skin was burning. After trying what felt like all of my options, I finally accepted that Roaccutane was my final and only option. By this point I was at my lowest. I felt insecure, unconfident, ugly and worthless.
A friend of mine encouraged me to watch a blogger who had documented her Roaccutane journey. I remember watching her video and crying the whole way through. The courage she had to be so open and show her raw emotions on camera gave me the encouragement I needed. After this, I had the confidence to set up my own Instagram to motivate me throughout my journey. There was born ‘@_myskinstory’. Each day, regardless of how ugly I felt, I would take 3 photos: 1 of the left side, 1 of the right side and 1 front on to track my progress. To my surprise, on my down days, the photos that used to haunt my photo gallery actually made me feel so much better. I was able to look at how far I had come and compare old photos of my skin to where it was now.
Fast forward to the beginning of 2019, and I feel confident! I never ever thought I would have been able to feel confident with myself and my skin again! My skin journey has been a massive roller coaster to get where I am today. Even after all that I have been through, I am now in a place where I am able to say that I am thankful to have suffered with acne. This journey has taught me so much about skincare and I’ve even been able to help other people through my own experience.
Today, we see a lot of people speak about skin positivity and it’s so refreshing. Nowadays, these taboo subjects are so openly spoken about which helps to make others feel as if they aren’t alone. To know that there is possible help. And, to know that ‘perfect’ doesn’t exist.
